Chennai schools are popular
throughout the country. What is remarkable about schools in Chennai,
is that all the schools, regardless of the board and syllabus it follows
or the governing body it is under, are qualitatively very good. There
are innumerable private schools and government and government aided
schools that follow various boards of education. Parents have an array
of choices to decide which one to put them under. The CBSE and the State
Board syllabi are widely followed, although there are several excellent
schools in the city which follow the ICSE and the Matriculation Boards.
A lot of schools in Chennai are run by convents here of which several
of them were started during the British period. A lot of impetus is
given on extracurricular activities like dance, music, painting and
also sports. Perhaps the fact that Chennai is a center of tradition
and culture is due to the splendid foundation that children receive
